AMDA Nepal’s emergency relief team in Nepal Flood 2017

Situation update:

Three days of relentless downpours staring from 11 August, 2017 sparked flash floods and landslides, badly affected the Terai region of Nepal. As of 16 August, when AMDA Nepal started its emergency relief mission, 18,320 families were confirmed to have been displaced, and 75,000 families affected by the flooding. Over 100,000 people were said to be rescued by formal and informal search and rescue.

Water levels in flood-affected areas was gradually receding as the rainfall had significantly decreased or stopped in most parts of the country. However, the number of affected districts had increased from 27 to 35; Morang, Sunsari, Siraha, Rautahat, Mahottari, Dhanusa, Sindhuli, Bara, Parsa, Dang, Banke and Bardiya are among the worst hit districts. The Ministry of Home Affairs said that over 80 percent of land in the Tarai had inundated. Hydro-meteorological stations in Banke, Chitwan and Makwanpur recorded the heaviest rainfall in 60 years.

With the weather in Nepal improving, authorities and humanitarian agencies, have been able to reach out to affected districts over the past two days and there are reports that security forces and authorities have cleared some roads. However, significant access challenges remain; Biratnagar airport remains closed, and other basic services such as transport routes, electric power and drinking water supplies, and communications are reportedly still disrupted in some places. Several major highways, notably the East-West highway, and inner roads linking villages have been severely damaged.

As of 18 August, the districts with the highest numbers of people affected by the floods are; Saptari, Rautahat, Mahottari, Siraha, Baridya, Sunsari, Banke, Chitwan, Morang, Sarlahi, Kailali and Jhapa. Across all affected districts, 44,683 families have been displaced, with at least 383 schools and learning centres are being used as temporary shelters.

Search and rescue operations have now been completed, and focus of the response has now shifted to the provision of relief to the affected population.

As of 20 August 2017, 143 people confirmed dead, 30 are disappeared and 43 are injured due to this calamity. 79,812 families were confirmed to have been displaced, and 144,444 families affected by the flooding.
